Chapter 16

Kallista had been tired before the dinner, but nothing compared to how exhausting dinner had been. After saying their goodbyes, Roo drove them to his fixer-upper in his newly detailed Audi. He shook his head when Albert brought it around and shook his hand while sliding a couple of hundred-dollar bills into his hand. Albert protested, but Roo instructed him to give it to his daughter for lattes or textbooks. Kallista was beginning to see a different side to her protector. He presented a rough and dangerous persona, but she had caught a glimpse of his kindness toward others. She wondered where he had learned those attributes… or who was responsible for training this battered warrior?

When they pulled into Roo’s driveway, Kallista nearly laughed out loud. Catching her expression, Roo simply nodded before welcoming her to his mansion. That caused her to chuckle. The house standing before them was a ranch style, with a blend of stone and wood planks. Painted a butter yellow with white trim didn’t speak to the man sitting next to her.

“Not what you expected?”

“Not at all, especially seeing where you were raised.”

“I spent eighty percent of my time in the basement, where the servant quarters were. It peeved my mother, but the manor never felt like home to me. This does. It has four bedrooms, two baths, and a small pool in the back.”

“How much land do you have?”

“Three acres, which is more than enough. It’s just me here.”

“Your family home would take up all three acres here.”

“Yup. Trust me, I’ve heard it more than once.”

“I can only imagine.”

“Come on, let me show you where you’ll stay for the next few nights,” Joey said as he unlocked the door.

“What the…?” Roo didn’t finish his question. He didn’t have to. Kallista followed him inside where the vandalism was apparent.

Roo immediately pulled his Sig-Sauer from his shoulder holster and cleared the coat closet, and pushing Kallista into the empty space. “Stay put,” he whispered before clearing the remaining rooms of his home. After he felt confident they were alone, he opened the door and let Kallista exit. She finally had a clear glimpse of the damage done. Graffiti covered three of the four walls. Statements like, ‘she’s mine’ or ‘back off playboy’ were spray painted.

“Oh no, Joey. I’m so sorry.”

“You have nothing to apologize for. Obviously, this was done before they took Cora into custody. I’ll get it cleaned up. A couple coats of paint will take care of it. It’s not like the house doesn’t need a good paint job anyway. Let me just take some photos and send them to Blaze. Then I’ll call the police and report it. Not quite the home welcoming I was expecting.”

“You didn’t see it when you dropped Buster off?”

“No, I put him in the back. There’s a doggie door, so he could access his food and water dishes. Speaking of which, let me go find him.” Roo began calling out for him, and in a matter of seconds, the beast flew inside through the doggie door.
